What this is
Meilo is a community app that helps you find your people, discover places, and share real-life moments. This privacy policy explains what personal data we collect from you, why we need it, how long we keep it, and what rights you have over it. We have written this in plain language because we believe you deserve to understand exactly what happens to your information.
What data we collect
We only collect what we genuinely need to run Meilo. Here is the full list:
- Name and email address — so you can sign in, recover your account, and so people you choose to connect with can find you.
- Date of birth — to confirm you are old enough to use Meilo (13+) and to apply age-appropriate safety settings. We do not display your exact age or birthday to other users.
- Morning mood check-ins — when you choose to check in via the Morning page, we store your mood and energy level so we can suggest gentle, relevant activities for your day. This is private to you by default.
- Posts, moments, memories and comments — the content you create and choose to share. You control the audience for every post: public, your circles only, or just you.
- Your general location area — we ask for your city or neighbourhood so we can show you nearby places, events, and circles. We do not track your precise GPS location in real time unless you explicitly share it on a post or check-in.
- Interests and world follows — the topics, worlds, and circles you follow, so we can personalise your feed and surface things you care about.
- Basic technical data — device type, session tokens, and error logs. This is purely to keep the app running smoothly and securely.
Why we collect it
We use your data for these specific reasons:
- To run the app — showing you relevant places, events, circles, and people nearby.
- To keep you safe — enforcing age limits, handling reports, and applying blocks.
- To personalise your experience — tailoring your feed, Pulse, and recommendations based on your interests and location area.
- To help you reflect — Morning check-ins and Mini You insights are built from your own activity to suggest gentle, real-world actions. This is not medical advice and is not a clinical, fitness, or mental health tool.
- To improve Meilo — using anonymised, aggregated data to understand how people use the app and make it better.
We use the legal basis of legitimate interests for most processing, and consent where you explicitly choose to share content or enable features like location sharing.
How long we keep your data
- Account data — kept for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your profile, posts, and personal data within 30 days.
- Posts and content — kept until you delete them or delete your account. You can remove any post at any time.
- Mood check-ins — kept for up to 12 months so you can see patterns in Mini You, then automatically deleted. You can clear them manually at any time from your profile.
- Technical logs — anonymised or deleted after 90 days.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We only share data with trusted service providers who help us run Meilo — our hosting provider, database service, and map provider. Each of these is contractually bound to protect your data. We will only share data with law enforcement if we are legally required to do so.
Your rights
Under GDPR and UK data protection law, you have the following rights:
- Right to access — you can request a copy of all the data we hold about you.
- Right to correct — you can update your name, email, bio, and interests at any time in your profile or settings.
- Right to delete — you can delete your account and all associated data from Profile → Danger zone. We will remove everything within 30 days.
- Right to restrict processing — you can use Incognito Local Mode to browse without broadcasting your presence, or adjust privacy settings to limit what others see.
- Right to object — you can opt out of personalised recommendations and analytics at any time.
- Right to data portability — you can request your data in a standard format to take elsewhere.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@meilo.app. We will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and tracking
Meilo does not use third-party advertising cookies or trackers. We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in, and basic analytics to understand how the app is used. You can disable analytics tracking in your browser if you prefer.
Children
Meilo is not intended for children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it immediately.
